Anja Božič

Year of Enrollment:
2020

Anja earned her BA and MA in Classics at the University of Ljubljana, where she wrote her thesis on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, ancient hexameter and its adaptations in Slovenian and other modern languages. Following her specialization in classical philology, Anja continued her MA studies with a degree in Medieval Studies at CEU, where she was working on Pier Paolo Vergerio the Elder’s orations (and some of his letters) in praise of St. Jerome. Jerome remains on center stage also in her PhD project, while the topic of humanist oratory in praise of saints has been expanded into a comprehensive inquiry into the continuity between the late-medieval sermons and equivalent forms of religious discourse adopted by humanist authors.

Besides the main focus of her research, Anja’s other interests include paleography, codicology, and the development of medieval literacy (both pragmatic documents as well as book culture). One of her main engagements is also translation of Latin humanist epistolography and she has a particular fondness for the letters of Petrarch.

To complement the depths of the PhD working life, from time to time, she has been known to disappear into the cleansing air of the Slovenian Alps.
